I began watching The Honeymooners probably in about 1952. At the time it was a segment on the Cavalcade of Stars variety show on Saturday nights. Audrey Meadows played Alice, but when the show began a few years earlier, Pert Kelton did the part until she ran afoul of the blacklist. Eventually The Honeymooners became a stand-alone 1/2-hour sitcom in 1955.
Gleason revived The Honeymooners in 1966 as part of a rotating group of hour long variety entertainments called (what else?) The Jackie Gleason Show. A Honeymooners show would be broadcast every 2 or 3 weeks. Each show featured original songs and dances with Sheila MacRae and Jane Kean now cast as Alice and Trixie. Interestingly on one of the shows Pert Kelton was featured as Alice Kramden's mother. |
