I find it very hard to believe that ANYone who saw both plays--certainly back then--could think that Simon's work was better than Guare's.

But if I recall correctly, the Pulitzers aren't for seeing the play -- it's based on its literary merit. And certainly, sometimes lesser works win (Rabbit Hole, I'm lookin' at you).
