Both Six Degrees... and Lost In Yonkers were worthy. Rabbit Hole is a fine play but the Pulitzer does indeed seem excessive.
The Pulitzer is more often an acknowledgement of the playwright's body of work or place in the cultural zeitgeist than it is of the quality of the play specifically awarded.
