With regard to Nanette, Carole was cast by the producer and musical director but not the director who was unavailable at the time. When the director finally returned, just as the Company was on its way to Boston, the Director was upset that the casting was done without him, and wanted more of a dancer than a singer. So, he had the change made.
With regard to The Baker's Wife, Carole was just the first of many who were fired in a desperate and misguided attempt to fix the show by firing people, rather than by actually fixing what was needed. Carole opened the Show in LA to rave reviews for her, but Topol was the bigger star at the time, so they Fired Carole first, eventually they fired Topol, and the director, and a number of others, but never really fixed the show, so it closed out of town. |
