Uncharitably, the only reason to give Springsteen a special Tony is so that he would show up and do a song on the Broadcast and maybe improve ratings by a point or two. What would be the purpose of the Tony otherwise? One of our great music performers does a limited engagement on Broadway, doing what he has been doing for years on stages and in arenas and stadiums around the world. So - he gets a Tony for moving his show into a Broadway theatre for a bit? Just wondering.
That would mean that any great musical star who took a limited engagement on Broadway would get a Tony, so they could be lured onto the CBS Awards broadcast. Ah, Broadway. |
