That was on the list I was going to post but I wasn't sure if mikem wanted those kinds of examples. Now I probably won't get around to posting it till late tonight or tomorrow.

But Cullum was not the understudy. He'd been the understudy for both Arthur and Mordred in the original cast of Camelot, and he took over as Mordred when Roddy McDowall left for Cleopatra, but he was never an understudy in On a Clear Day.

It was Hal Linden who was the standby for both Jourdan (and then Cullum) and Clifford David in Clear Day. According Edward Jablonski's rather perfunctory bio of Lerner, Burton Lane wanted Linden to take over when they decided to fire Jourdan, but Lerner said he was too Jewish. Go figure. Why can't that character be Jewish? Maybe it was Lerner's general craziness at that time thanks to Max Jacobson.

Jablonski also says that Cullum had been in the chorus, but as far as I can tell, he wasn't. So maybe the story isn't true. I don't think a source is given. I'm guessing it was Lane who told all this to Jablonski, and Jablonski just didn't bother to check whether Cullum had actually been in the show before he took over.
