In Praise of 'Conways' (Possible Spoilers)

Saw Time and the Conways this afternoon and was moved and impressed. Yes, the play is creaky and over-emphatic but as my partner said afterwards, "It says something true." I did find the first twenty minutes or so insufferable -- a lot of high pitched, overexcited voices -- but then both the actors and I settled into the play. I was hooked completely by the Scene 1 to Scene 2 set change which beautifully represented the play's theme and the interplay of future and past, as the past literally recesses and the future descends. The second scene, I thought, was remarkable and absolutely riveting.. Taichman's direction is sure and steady throughout (as it was in Indecent), production values are first rate, and the cast is outstanding, especially McGovern, Gabriel Ebert, Steven Boyer and Anna Camp. Not a great play, perhaps, but definitely worth reviving after 80 years. Highly recommended, especially if you can get a TDF ticket.
