Found Doris Shapiro's description of the events from WE DANCED ALL NIGHT. She describes the situation as Lane being very hesitant about Jourdan from the outset and then becoming adamant that he be replaced in Boston. Lane (and presumably others) went behind Lerner's back (insert Dr. Feelgood joke here) and inquired about Cullum's availability to travel to Boston and take over.

Lerner was upset with the way it was handled with Cullum, but finally capitulated and told Jourdan himself given their friendship since Gigi.

Shapiro doesn't mention Linden, but my bet is that Lerner would have found him to be too menschy and unintimidating to be an elegant contrast to Daisy.
