William Daniels discusses this in his autobiography. According to him, there was initially much more to the Melinda story, and many actors were sent packing when they decided to trim the flashback.
He also describes no shortage of deception regarding the replacement of Jourdan with Cullum. Cullum does not appear to have been an understudy in this show. The cast had "secret" rehearsals with John Cullum during the afternoons, they were told, because Cullum would play a few performances while Louis Jourdan worked on the constant revisions. They were apparently surprised when the role was officially recast.
Daniels felt that the change was a mistake. He thought Jourdan's "sexy French chemistry" more than made up for his limited singing voice, and that a Rex Harrison approach to the score would have worked just fine. He liked Cullum and acknowledged how well he sang, but regretted the loss of Jourdan's and Harris's chemistry.
I doubt anyone is ever replaced in any show without someone feeling as Daniels did about the change in "On A Clear Day." |
