Okay, so here's a question...if Lerner had any issues at all with Linden and didn't think he was appropriate for the role for whatever reason, why was he made the understudy? Doesn't hiring someone as an understudy presume that they are good enough to go on if needed and, if the show enjoys a long run, almost guarantee that this person will go on at some point?

Was there no one else available that Lerner could hire in all New York?

As the situation stood, it would seem that Lerner was okay with not giving the audience what he thought was the very best performance possible any night when Linden might be called on to perform the role. I just can't imagine someone being that cavalier with their work.
