I don't think the decision about understudies is just about whether he/she is perfect for the part. In many cases, the actor is playing a different part in the show. In many cases, people get chosen because he/she is a solid citizen who people on the production have worked with in the past and/or can depend on to learn the role with a minimal amount of rehearsal and hand-holding.
Linden was a standby, not an understudy, for both Mark and Edward, which probably meant that he could be counted on to get to the Hellinger and play either role. If someone had said to Lerner: "let's just use Hal Linden--he's a complete professional" he was probably relieved that one more thing didn't need to be debated or solved. You can't win every vote in a collaboration. |
