Daisy doesn't sing the song "On a Clear Day . . ." in the movie (Barbra Streisand sings it, over the end credits) and she couldn't possibly sing it in the stage musical either. Daisy doesn't possess the information given in the song. She doesn't know anything about ESP and has never studied it; all she knows, at this point, is that she's trying to give up smoking and thinks hypnosis might help. And besides, why would Daisy be trying to bolster the doctor's self-confidence?
I don't want to belabor the point. I only mention it because far too much of this sort of thing goes on in jukebox musicals, revisals, and just bad musicals in general--re-assigning songs to characters who have no particular reason to sing them or are not so positioned in the plot to be able to sing them plausibly. Sure, many audiences may not notice and may not care, but it can be an almost painful experience for those of us who do. |
