In Miss Martin's defense, this wasn't really an instance of a star stealing someone else's number simply because she wanted to sing it. The out of town tryout of PETER PAN was hugely problematic, and a big complaint was that Martin - a major star - didn't have enough songs, particularly in the second act. Kathleen Nolan who played Wendy in the production spoke very generously and pragmatically in an interview for "The Peter Pan Chronicles" in which she states she was heartbroken to lose the song but that it was absolutely the right decision, given the circumstances, to give it to Martin.
