How many theaters reach the 100-year mark? To me, the Muny deserves all due respect for delivering theater to the multitudes in St. Louis; it seats 11,000 a show (and the back 1,500 seats are free). If you look at the list of Regional Tony winners, there are many theaters that have developed new works (that have reached Broadway), but I also see a number of them that have not (as far as I can tell). There's no shame in producing in revivals or introducing audiences to them. And there's nothing in the official Tony rules or criteria that docks a regional theater for doing it.

All theaters have one thing in common: keeping the art of live performance vibrant and developing the next generation of audiences.

That said, the Muny also has a storied career. The Shuberts ran it during part of the 1930s. Plus, many top stars have stepped on its stage. It's no surprise to see Yul Brynner in ''The King and I'' or Carol Channing in ''Hello, Dolly!'' there. But here are others who are part of Muny's history:

Milton Berle in ''Two by Two'' (1971)
Carol Burnett and Rock Hudson in ''I Do! I Do!'' (1974)
Sid Caesar in ''Oliver!'' (1970)
Bette Davis in ''Blossom Time'' (1930)
W.C. Fields in ''Show Boat'' (1930)
Cary Grant in ''The Three Musketeers'' (1931)
Bob Hope in ''Roberta'' (1958)
Gene Kelly in ''Take Me Along'' (1974)
Vincent Price in ''Damn Yankees'' (1978)
Mary Travers in ''South Pacific'' (1973)
