| A friend of mine likes to take her elderly mother to a Broadway show now and then. As she explained it to me, Broadway shows set aside seats for the handicapped and their companions. You can get two tickets (one for the person in the wheelchair, and the other for the family member, friend, spouse, etc., who helps the disabled theatergoer). Some shows will even allow you to buy four (one for the person in the wheelchair, and three more for the companions). The handicapped seats are usually the least expensive seats in the house, and priced to be a bargain for the disabled. (By the way, the handicapped seat is not a seat at all; it's an empty space to park the wheelchair. But the companion seats are next to it.) So my friend tried to get a pair of handicapped seats for her elderly mom and herself to ''Frozen.'' This was the morning they first went on sale. Much to her dismay, she checked out the first few months of ''Frozen,'' and found that apparently savvy resellers had bought up the handicapped seats, and the accompanying companion seats. My friend says they are ''eating'' the cost of the handicapped space, and reselling the bargain-rate companion seats online at exorbitant rates, without telling the prospective buyers that they're companion seats. My friend says that ushers often help her mom to her spot and my friend's seat. Usually, her ticket is stamped Companion. But the folks who unwittingly buy those resold companion tickets could be in for an unhappy surprise at the show. My friend says she heard that some folks were recently kicked out of ''Hello, Dolly!'' because they had bought companion seats and weren't accompanied by anyone in a wheelchair. Beware! The resellers are doing something doubly scummy: cheating the disabled out of their seats and profitting off of unknowing buyers. |
