In praise of Jim Walton

Hearing news of the upcoming revival of Crazy for You (following the concert earlier this year), I am reminded of a performance which kept me in a tender joy for its entire duration: Jim Walton's portrayal of Bobby when PBS broadcast the Papermill reproduction of the Stroman show.

And that made me think how often Walton has graced the musical stage with warm and insightful performances. He can sing them with color and depth, he can dance them with elegance and precision - and he has that all-important wit that lifts a performance beyond the serviceable and 'good' into the dimension of the indelible and transporting. I noted on a database how often he is asked to be the stand-by for major roles, and with damn good reason - you'd always know the show would be in more than just safe hands. I remember seeing the Merrily reunion concert, and all the complexity and warmth - yes - he brought to Franklin Shepherd.

Like Dick Latessa did, and so many more, Jim Walton sustains the greatness of Broadway when other alleged 'stars' come and go.

A colossal presence in recent musical theatre history, and seldom recognized because of the usual blindness of showbiz to anything above the merely fashionable.

And no, I don't know him at all; I just admire stupendous talent!
