As of right now, there are 8 new musicals scheduled to open this season: Springsteen, Band's Visit, Frozen, Spongebob, Mean Girls, Margaritaville, Prince of Broadway, and Home for the Holidays. Mean Girls is the big unknown factor here.
Springsteen is what used to be called a Special Event. No one but he could perform the show, so there is no future for this show and I can't see it winning over The Band's Visit. If The Band's Visit wasn't in the picture and Mean Girls disappoints, though, it might be a different story. The rest of the competition isn't that strong.
A Special Tony for Springsteen seems to be in the bag, assuming he can get one without inviting the voters (I don't know the rules). |
