I feel like the plays and musicals that have a simple spine and give her space to weave her dreams - such as "Juan Darien", "The Green Bird", and even "The Lion King" to some extent - allow her to deliver a coherent experience that feels like a coherent story. When a story is complicated or unclear - "Spider-Man", "Across the Universe" - her staging and storytelling tends to mirror that by becoming too busy and without a center.
Still, I've never walked away from anything she did not being amazed by something I saw.... and even "The Lion King" contains some moments that I think are god-awful, as much as it's now been running for half my life. |
