Playing like the underdog? Why would a studio openly dismiss its chances for awards glory when the movie has not been released? It does seem to be a crowd-pleaser ( 97% likes from among those polled on the YouTube official trailer page). Maybe Fox is following the path of a former musical released by the studio -- THE SOUND OF MUSIC was slaughtered by top critics ( 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from TOP CRITICS) but with an 86% overall rating. The musical went on to win that season's Oscar Best Picture!
