| Here's why I might give Wells' report some credence: He's been covering the Oscar beat for some time, and usually has pretty good sources. But more to the point, if a studio thinks it has a real Oscar contender, they're not shy about letting everyone know about it. It takes months to lay the groundwork, and build the buzz. Last year, at this point, movie writers were buzzing all over ''La La Land'' and ''Moonlight.'' ... If you go to Sasha Stone's AwardsDaily.com, she lists 20 predictions for Best Picture, which covers Frontrunners, Strong Favorites and Dark Horses. ''The Greatest Showman'' doesn't even make her radar. Nor is she alone. Scott Feinberg of the Hollywood Reporter categorizes his Best Picture predictions as Front Runners, Major Threats, Possibilities and Long Shots. Out of 31 slots, ''The Greatest Showman'' isn't among them. Instead, all the Oscar buzz is about ''Dunkirk,'' ''The Shape of Water,'' ''Call Me by Your Name,'' ''Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri'' ... The Golden Globes LOVES musicals, so maybe ''Showman'' will do well there (''La La Land'' swept 7 prizes there the last time). |
