"And I"m Telling You..." - great number, but doesn't quite stop the show since Michael Bennett, before allowing an opportunity for much applause, shows/cuts to the Dreams (very briefly) performing without Effie. First act curtain. Yes, then tumultuous applause, but it's intermission -- the audience hasn't stopped the show -- Bennett and the librettist has. Also the first time I saw "Dreamgirls" there were jerks already acting like Holliday had finished her number by anticipatory whoop-whoops and applause as she started and continued to do her number. Very annoying. She was really good, though I actually preferred her second act number, since the jerks in the audience weren't projecting themselves vocally onto that. Also saw Lillias White in the revival and she was even better without all the growling Holliday did (though some people love the growling-- different strokes for different folks, I guess).

"A Call from the Vatican" -- "Nine" - Anita Morris performing one of the sexiest numbers ever got tumultuous applause that went on for a very, very long time. Montevecchi's "Folies Bergere" also landed, but not as consistently as Morris' in the number of times I went back to see the show.
