I saw my first actual show-stopping number - defined as one in which the performer was forced to do it again - when Ray Bolger did Once in Love with Amy (Where's Charley?).
I hate to sound too pedantic - I really do, lol - but the definition you described is an encore. A showstopper need not lead to an encore. And mostly they don't - I think encores are really very rare (unless they're written into the show, which they sometimes are).
That said, I'm jealous that you got to see Bolger doing that show live. Must have been a lot of fun! |
