| Loved it. Loved everything about it. 30 plus years is too far back for me to notice what has been cut, but I didn't miss anything. To me it was a fantastic three-act play full of invention, incredibly funny lines, and a wonderful hopelessly romantic central character. The gay male zeitgeist sure has caught up to Arnold's quest for commitment! The performance by Urie is in the quirky mold of Fierstein and yet is totally his own. Ruehl rules as "the Mother" hitting every one of her one liners out of the park and viciously giving as good as she gets in the big confrontation. I'd forgotten how much empathy the play has for the Laurel character and Roxanna Hope Radja and Fierstein make her smart, funny and self deluded without turning her into a villain. I was delighted with the rest of the casting and performances. I think the play really stands the test of time, as a time capsule and as a universal tale of the sometimes very painful toll that being true to oneself can take. |
