The original cast -- Hirsch, Gillette, Gorman, Wedgeworth -- was a perfect ensemble. And the play represented the best to date effort on Simon's part to write a "serious comedy," something he successfully mastered by the time he got to his memory plays.

As his time receedes, it's interesting to contemplate which of Simon's plays will endure. I'd nominate "Sunshine Boys" and "Odd Couple" from his early shows and the Eugene trilogy and "Lost in Yonkers" from his later plays. Then there are all the others. Of them, I'd say "Chapter Two" is in the running for some longevity.
