I know we all have to separate the artists from the work, but I always have trouble with CHAPTER TWO because the play is famously so closely based on Simon's relationship with Mason. I find myself having trouble rooting for the central couple because I know that, in real life, Simon and Mason eventually divorced. I can't seem to make that separation here. I don't normally have that issue.
For example, I have no trouble watching I LOVE LUCY, even though the real life couple at the center of the show split just as it ended. Of course, Ricky and Lucy were much different characters than Desi and Lucille, but the core idea for the show did spring from a basis in their relationship. |
