When I was a youth, online meant....waiting on line. Depending on the amount of sleep needed, everyone (locally) had an equal chance of getting tickets. As long as you were willing to put in the time . I suppose that this system is fairer to all.
As someone who doesn't live in NYC -- but does more than my fair share of supporting the theatre industry! -- I don't miss it.
