thanks to the staging, she couldn't STOP the show, she Delayed it for a long time, as the audience kept applauding, hoping for her return
I think that's enough to count as stopping. When traffic stops, it doesn't mean you abandon your car and buy a new one ... it's a delay, and eventually the cars start moving again. I stop for coffee, stop to smell the roses ... and then start up again.
Otherwise only accident, injury, technical issues (66% of the time a turntable of some sort!), etc., will literally "stop" a show. Everything else is a delay while applause occurs for longer than usual.
The only time I felt that the momentum of a show was literally halted by an excess of enthusiasm was the closing night of Seussical, where I felt like we clapped for about three minutes following "All For You" ... but I have since learned (for reasons I'm not allowed to disclose) that it turns out what felt like three was actually only one minute--but a good solid one minute of enthusiasm! (And I was among the enthusiasts--momentum be damned!) |
