Sondheim says that Oscar Hammerstein ''took a play that was about homosexuality in the West and turned it a sunny musical.''
I've never seen or read Lynn Riggs' ''Green Grow the Lilacs,'' but are its characters - Curly, Laurey and Jeeter - ''coded''?
I found this fascinating article by Charles Morrow (below). Tidbits: Riggs was a closeted Oklahoma playwright who was one-eighth Cherokee. ... While a Hollywood screenwriter, he escorted Bette Davis to many events. ... Riggs attended the Broadway opening of ''Oklahoma!'' and reportedly was delighted with it, but privately told a friend that he missed the genuine folk songs that used to accompany ''Green Grow the Lilacs.'' |
