I have a hard time swallowing the statement that Green Grow the Lilacs is a play about homosexuality. Based on what I have read, Curly and Laurey (as portrayed by Franchot Tone and June Walker) were decidedly heterosexual. In fact there is a rumor that John Kerr was conceived during the show's run. Given the fact that Riggs was a closeted gay writer, the play may have had a gay subtext. Many plays or films that I either read or saw as a child or teen from that era definitely have a gay subtext that I was oblivious to when I first encountered them. I'm guessing that Sondheim must be referring to either Jeeter or the ensemble of cowboys in the play.
