| I'm not sure I'd put it quite so definitively as you do, but it certainly can make a huge difference before even a word is spoken. The first example to spring to mind for me (although there are many others) is seeing Mielziner's original Death of a Salesman set in the 2012 Broadway production. It made a difference before a word was spoken, and it was probably a big reason why for the first time in my experience, the play completely fell into place. Everything that happened was seen through the world that the design created. And I think being on that strange set helped the actors. |
