I've read LILACS, too, and I don't see it, either. It does have some beautiful language--Oscar lifted many passages, and the folk music works well. I especially like the use of the "Ballad of Sam Hall," about a vicious killer facing the gallows, in the scene where Curley goads Jeeter.
