The bottom line answer is Real Estate prices. Century City was built on what used to be the 20th Century back lot. The theatre was part of the original development plan, but that area has become a business center of Los Angeles and it was much more valuable converting that space into viable office structures.
Also, one of the reasons the Shubert was built was to house long running productions. In the 70s-90s things like A CHORUS LINE, CATS, EVITA and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST all played over a year at the theatre. But sit downs in L.A. have become less of a thing. Some tours were still playing The Shubert in the early 2000s, but I think the space also sat empty a fair amount. |
