| I miss the Shubert partly because it was more or less mid-Los Angeles. I saw some great shows there. The orchestra sightlines were excellent although I wish overall it was a little smaller. I love the beauty of the Pantages but it wasn't built for theater (vaudeville was a different beast) and it is hard to see shows there unless you have great seats. But the Shubert sat vacant for much of the late 90s and 2000s and it's true that the property was far more valuable for office space than for live theater. I saw FOLLIES there (didn't understand a word of it, I was way too naive a teenager to get it) and CHORUS LINE (three times includes the brief appearance of Leland Palmer as Cassie) and so many more shows. My favorite L.A. theater was always the Huntington Hartford (now the Montalban and sadly rarely used for legit theater). |
