Iolanthe also has IMO the finest G&S overture by far, and one of only two actually written by Sullivan (the other being Yeomen). The use it makes of the "Oh, Foolish Fay' tune is extraordinary, including using it for a truly nifty modulation from Eb back to G major for the recap.
The whole score is full of wonderful little touches. e.g. the opening fairy chorus has a subtle passing reference to Mendelssohn's famous fairy chord from his Midsummer Night's Dream overture. |
