I didn't realize the depth of your studying and interests in the old shows. I share a lot of that.
Of Thee I Sing is eternal, it simply is always timely. I don't understand why it doesn't show up every 4 years like clockwork. Simply not at all dated.
Never seen One Touch of Venus, but as a Weill scholar, I find the score all over the place in terms of style. It almost seems like 2, possibly 3 different shows landed together at the same theater on the same night. Maybe the book brings it together in a way the score alone can not.
I've seen both Allegro and Lady/Dark. Allegro was a mess at its inception, the list of problems is long, but for the major one is the lack of a song for its hero, making him a cypher. Lady in the Dark is too dated in terms of the Psychology to play well (ok, sorry but I have a backgound in the field to go with my musical theater knowledge), the book scenes played like lead. The day I attended so did the 90 year old Kitty Carlisle Hart and she had sort of the same reaction I did. The score however is a thing of magnificence.
I will now keep a watchful eye out for your postings on classic musicals.
Oh yeah: Redhead never struck me as anything more than a 1 season semi-hit, best seen for a star turn. |
