Clift's character, the younger prince (he just turned 15 several days after the show opened), doesn't have any solos, but his prank about the threat of a revolution sets the whole plot in motion. He's helped by his cousin, the ten-year-old Prince Rudolph, played by noted child actor Jackie Kelk. Kelk had done some Vitaphone shorts and a film, as well as some stage credits before JUBILEE. He's best known as Homer Brown, Henry Aldrich's pal in the Alrich Family (both radio and TV) and the voice of Jimmy Olsen in SUPERMAN.
But theatre nerds here may be amused to know he also played Herbie, the candy counter boy, in Rodgers and Hammerstein's ME AND JULIET, during the "Intermission Talk" number. Herbie may or may not have been in his school spelling bee. :)
Laura, who is currently writing a chapter on JUBILEE and knows even more ridiculous and probably useless facts, but, hey, it keeps me off the streets... |
