| A beautiful little jewel of a show. The performances were subtle and moving, and the show took you on a lovely little journey. Didn't see it downtown but my companions did, and said the staging was very similar (they're fans of the work). Katrina Lenk gives an award-worthy performance; so does Tony Shalhoub. And can I just say that John Cariani is pure gold....I thought he was wonderful in Something Rotten and the Fiddler revival, and he's wonderful here. In each of these productions he takes a small supporting role and invests it with such heart and joy that you feel you've just met a real person. I hope he gets Tony-nominated again for this exquisite work. The show itself is quite small, careful and observant. Its simplicity and tone make it quite a bit different from anything I've seen on Broadway in a long time, which I loved. Some might be underwhelmed because it's not loud or brassy. I would most enthusiastically recommend it to my friends who loved Come From Away, mainly because it shares many themes and is also an unconventional Broadway experience. |
