Saw it in its Alliance Theatre tryout and loved it. There were some serious book problems, but it was hilarious and moving and had some wonderful songs. In light of Broadway's more, uh, empathetic view of small-town life and sensibilities-- as seen in Come From Away, Waitress, The Band's Visit-- I hope they fix that problem in The Prom. It gets small towns all wrong and thus seems very very dated (even if it does deal with a same-sex prom date controversy). But there is a lot that is wonderful about that show and I was really hoping it would make it to Broadway.
For what it's worth, the other Alliance pre-Broadway tryout that should have made it further was Manilow's Harmony, which remains one of the best productions I have seen anywhere. And I think might be more relevant than ever. |
