Yes that is VERY relevant, for both NYC and regional (and sometimes Community) theaters around the country (and world of course). But I must say that assuming we all think there are several Broadway shows a season worth seeing, I USUALLY pay less to see a broadway show than I do to see off-broadway or regional or local theater. I have not seen community productions because I couldn't bank on the quality and they wouldn't sell the ticket for under $40 (or whatever it was at the time) and I can see a broadway show for $25-50 in the majority of cases.

And to discuss people who will to spend $800 a seat is an exercise in pointlessness because those people aren't in any way the average person financially or in their theater habits. A non-rich person will to do that probably doesn't care about seeing many shows otherwise they'd know to wait and see it cheaper because they could see 8-15+ great shows for the same price as that 1, or they're both rich and an avid theater goer and spend what they need to/can spend for what they want and that's fine.

And I don't see *everything* on broadway, often skipping the kind of show you highlight about Broadway. But it's also relevant to remember that those are not the *only* kind of shows that happen on Broadway. Many/most of the longer running hits can fall into that category but certainly not all. And if I catch a great show while it's only running for 2 months, be it at a non-profit or because it couldn't sell commercially, that doesn't make it less great. I mean just to name a few: Caroline or Change, Shuffle Along, The Wild Party, Parade, Marie Christine, Passing Strange, Hamilton, American Psycho, Spring Awakening, Grey Gardens, The Light in the Piazza... all shows I think are brilliant or at least am very glad I got to see, all on broadway, some ran very short, some longer, of those only Hamilton is a real hit... and there are many more examples. And so many plays also on broadway that are great/challenging shows that didn't last long, but I saw them in first class productions, and most likely paid less than I would to see them regionally, and also KNEW about them because they made it to broadway.

So there's many ways to look at all this. My point is just, where there's a will to see theater affordably in NYC (including/especially Broadway and prominent off-broadway), there is definitely a way. If paying more than the price of a movie isn't in someone's budget, then professional theater is gonna be hard for them more than a couple times a year -- but also one must remember, at least in nyc, if you skip 2 movies in theater and you can pay for a rush ticket to a broadway or off-broadway show.
