This get repeated a lot here, but it is not true. A number of people I know have worked as understudies and had no other role in the show. Given the small cast size of most contemporary plays, that would mean most shows would only have standbys and no understudies---which is not the case.

Standby's are usually actors of some reputation who go one when a lead or prominent cast member cannot.
Understudies and standbys have different statuses. Understudies have to be ready to go on with less notice than a standby. They often cover more than one role.

Cherry Jones is an acclaimed actress, so she might get a standby whereas Heather Goldenhersh is less known and would get an understudy.
