I pretty much do the same thing as you for most of the shows I see in New York. In recent years I did pay full price for both Fun Home and Hamilton at the Public, Dear Evan Hansen at 2nd Stage, and Sweet Charity at the Signature, but it was either general rush, standing room, or cheap rear mezz for most of the others. I saw 41 Broadway/off-Broadway shows last season on 4 different trips. I've been coming to New York since '93 and I have been able to see pretty much everything I wanted to (including every one of the hot ticket shows). I would like to see both Harry Potter and Frozen, but it won't kill me if I don't. I suspect that they are the type of show that are definitely entertaining, but only in a kitschy sort of way. My gut tells me that what is going on now with tickets for these two shows is a sales ploy to bilk those willing to pay outrageous prices. I'll take my chances at copping standing room or something comparable when they open.

I live in the Chicago area where ticket prices are still pretty sane (except for Hamilton at the Private Bank Theatre). My partner and I generally see one or two plays/musicals every week.
