| I've learned to be a little cautious when it comes to discussing ticket prices with the person seated next to me in the theater. I had a bad experience when I saw The Illusion at the Signature in 2011. I had done the rush for something like $20. It had been raining so when I got to me seat, I needed to take off my jacket and stow it and my umbrella under the seat. During the process I set my ticket down on the armrest. The lady next to me saw it and went ballistic. She created quite a scene, berated me for being an opportunistic tourist, and demanded the usher reseat her somewhere better. I was given a polite reprimand by the theater manager and was advised to keep the ticket stub in my pocket in the future. However, I had a much better experience last fall when I saw Hamilton on 10/30/16. A year earlier I had purchased two tickets in the mezzanine for my partner and myself. When my partner ran into a conflict and couldn't make the trip, I resold his ticket on Telecharge for a substantial profit. When I was seated, the person next to me was a 20-something girl from Australia. She told me how excited she was that she had been able to secure a reasonably priced ticket (her words) for Hamilton. I asked her what other shows she wanted to see during the rest of her trip. She mentioned a number of shows which included Comet, School of Rock, and The Front Page -- three shows I planned on seeing myself. When she asked me if I knew anything about inexpensive ways to see shows, I gave her a shorthand lesson in rush and standing room technique. She ended up joining me in the lines for the three and got to see them for a very reasonable price (my words). She was really cute and a great theatre conversationalist. We ended up having a terrific time in the lines for each of those shows. |
