Maybe it's because I'm younger still than the average theater goer, or because I am a big comedy fan outside of theater, who knows... but I have found over and over there to exists a thing I call "theater funny", where audiences who don't seem used to REALLY funny or REALLY clever stuff laugh their heads off at anything mildly funny if it's done in a play or musical. A lot of times they are laughing at something I've seen done 100 times as good or better somewhere else (even in plays/musicals) as if it were a fresh take.
And yes a lot of it is due to the live aspect and the communal experience of being in a live audience, the group think.
But I always find it fascinating, and it makes me very hesitant to assume something on stage is funny when I see reviews saying it is. |
