Agree with you about Tom McGowan. I thought Ellis’ last revival was about the same: too much of the actors staring at the audience as if to say “I know, isn’t this show wonderfully literate and charming.” To be fair to Ellis, the original show needed a tougher guiding hand to insist that the creators transform this from The Shop Around the Corner with songs to a full blown musical.
Everything Laura Benanti does is especially telegraphed and overworked. She doesn’t have the vulnerability that makes me really care that she gets together with Georg at the end. Terrible, unflattering costumes for the female leads, especially Jane Krakowski’s slit dress, which a store clerk would never wear in that era and makes her great figure look lumpy. |
