Productions can change greatly over time. Sometimes they improve, but more often they deteriorate.
I remember seeing An Inspector Calls a few months into its run. I loved it. I took some friends six weeks later and Rosemary Harris had so changed her performance from something deeply felt and still to a flouncy campy vaudeville turn. However, her presence was so strong that it made the actors she played against look bad as they tried to maintain their own performances . It ruined the show.
This was an extreme case, but in general most shows that I have seen more than once have some decline over time. I usually try to see something within the first 6 month or after a major cast change. I know I should not think this way, but with current Bway and off-Bway prices, I do not want to pay for something less than optimal. |
