I was fine seeing Van Hove's approach because it was a fresh interpretation, and I was already familiar with the story. Certainly the unnaturalness of Eddie's obsession with Catherine was made clearer, actually more explicit in this version than I have ever seen before. Unfortunately, by having Catherine walk around displaying her undergarments and letting Eddie touch her sexually, Miller's lines about her behaving like a child (delivered by Beatrice) seem ludicrous and did elicit some laughter from the audience when I saw it on Friday.
Van Hove makes it painfully obvious that Eddie is destroying himself. Beatrice sees this but is tragically helpless to stop it. I definitely was blown away by the emotion that was laid bare on stage. However, there is a lot more to A View from the Bridge than what is presented in this version. Other, more traditional approaches have brought those elements out more effectively. |
