| It is indeed. I just meant I think that Prince's record is even better. And even with Merrick having good taste, etc, he didn't produce nearly any musical that was a game changer or considered really brilliant. His record with plays is better than with musicals - outside of Gypsy none of the musical he produced have had much last impact or are considered in the top of the form. And though Hello Dolly is a wonderful musical, it isn't daring or innovative, it's not one of the *best* musical in my opinion, and is sometimes not even all that good - it's the overall package that makes it work. Whereas Prince's production one after another were the best musicals and the most brilliant and the game changers, and oh so many of them. He also produced ones that were just good old fashioned fun, and a couple that didn't work or didn't make any impact at all... but side to side there's no comparison, in terms of the way people write or see shows, the difference between what Prince achieved as producer vs Merrick. No disrespect to the extraordinary career of Merrick, without whom many wonderful musicals and plays may not have made it and many people may not have had the careers they had. |
