I don't think it's necessarily troubled and therefore avoiding critics (and the review seems to support it is not troubled). It's an odd situation on tour because shows go from city to city. If it were in New York (or sitting one place longer on the road) it would have several weeks of previews before anyone dreamed of reviewing it. Seems like they tried to take a week in Baltimore and part of a two week play in Detroit to have some previews before facing the critics. Perhaps a bit unorthodox, but not so odd for the show to try to achieve.

As the reviews point out (and which is why none of those major papers honored the embargo), it's highly unusual for a tour to say its first stop on a national tour (in this case, Baltimore) can't be reviewed. What's more, the show wouldn't have allowed reviews until it had nearly left town in Detroit.

Since ''Love Never Dies'' is capitalizing on the fact that it's a sequel to ''Phantom,'' the public deserves the right to know what to expect from the show, given that they're paying full prices. The folks in Baltimore and Detroit shouldn't just get to read about it ... AFTER the show has departed.
