Mary Martin is my favorite musical performer, bur Ethel Merman was a force of nature. Especially in Gypsy.. Merman was far more than just a big voice, an expert comedic and fairly good actress. Most of all you could not take your eyes off Merman when she was on stage. Martin was a more reliable performer.
