It wasn't just you. There were others of us who expressed dismay over the unexplored subtext, the flat book-scenes, and the absence of simple truth in the playing. See the Earlier thread about the broadcast. Benanti's beautiful and sounds beautiful, but it seemsclike she needs a director to hold her to the kind of truth that would crack her open to an audience. And the lead-guy has a helluva lot going for him. But the lesson was in Tom McGowan. His performance was authentic, which trumps beautiful singing, beautiful cheekbones, and/or veing clever every time.
I was left longing for Judy Garland's version, and not because she's such a genius but because she makes us believe in her and care about the romance.

Different strokes for different folks. ... This ''She Loves Me'' opened to a raft of rave reviews, led by Ben Brantley in the New York Times, who called it ''rapturously revived'' and wrote love letters to Laura Benanti, Zachary Levi and Jane Krakowski. Sheldon Harnick has applauded and lauded this cast, and the show got 8 Tony nominations and 9 Drama Desk nominations, winning the latter's prize for Best Musical Revival.

At any rate, I'm glad this filming of ''She Loves Me'' will allow many more to discover this jewel of a musical comedy with a gem of a cast.

I'm part of the group that thinks this a boring musical with 2nd class music, and a book that could use a lot of editing.

It's amazing to me that it was ever a hit
